In their October editorial, the PLOS Medicine Editors discuss the inequities that exist in regards to health, and what can be done to address inequity by better reporting of research in this area. The editorial highlights the development of a reporting guideline for systematic reviews, whose focus is research equity—PRISMA-E, also published this month in PLOS Medicine, and which the journal endorses. The editorial highlights that, by providing structured guidance on the transparent reporting of methods and results in these papers, the PRISMA-Equity 2012 guidelines have the potential to not only improve the state of the published literature, but also, as the authors of PRISMA-E note, to “legitimize and emphasize the importance of reporting health equity results.”
